Governor of Tripura DY Patil, who is also the chief rector of Tripura University, was the guest of honour while Indian Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and Foreign Minister Dipu Moni was present as the special guests of honour. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar was the special guest.

Tripura University Chancellor Amiya Kumar Bagchi presided over the function while vice chancellor Arunoday Saha delivered the welcome speech.

Tripura Governor DY Patil said the Indo-Bangla relationship is at its all time best now and wished her all the best.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said there are forces inimical to this process of strengthening of ties, in both countries and therefore, there is a need to remain careful and vigilant at all times.

In his recitation presented to Sheikh Hasina, Chancellor Prof Amiya Kumar Bagchi said, “You have devoted all your enormous ability in creating and sustaining an environment in the land you govern so that people can live worthwhile lives in peace with themselves and their neighbors.

Earlier, the Prime Minister along with other guests arrived at the convocation venue wearing gowns and then national anthems of both the countries were played.

Tripura university vice chancellor made the announcement of conferring DLit degree to Sheikh Hasina.

The Prime Minister unveiled the statue of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore.

Accepting the award with gratitude, Hasina quoted Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore as saying `I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy’.

She said the award will inspire and encourage her further in dedicating her life for the service of the people and the nation.

Quoting Tagore who had close relations with Tripura, the Prime Minister said: “The highest education is that which does not merely give us information, but makes our life harmonious with all existence.”

She said that Tripura University, a well known seat of learning, has been inspiring its students with the philosophy of values of love, equality, justice and freedom.

Hasina said: “I firmly believe in these values too, and therefore, with much pride, I accept this prestigious Doctor of Literature (honoris causa).”

Recalling back the days of the Liberation War in 1971, Hasina said that during those horrifying days, Bangladeshi people migrated en masse to take refuge in Tripura.

“We vividly remember those tragic days, and with deep gratitude, the love and support our hapless people received from the people of Tripura and the other neighboring Indian states.”

The Prime Minister said the Pakistani occupation forces had brutally cracked down on a defenseless people all over Bangladesh on 25 March 1971, setting in motion one of the largest human exoduses of the last millennium.

“As they streamed across the border with only their lives, starving and lost, they were welcomed by you with open arms.”

She recalled that Tripura state was flooded with refugees, who were more than its own population. Nevertheless, through the nine months of the liberation war, the people of Tripura and India stood by the Bangladeshis and selflessly helped the forsaken millions by sharing their food, shelter and other basic necessities.

Hasina said the freedom fighters also received training and support on this side of the border, and fought along with the Indian friends to the final surrender of the occupation forces and liberation of Bangladesh on 16 December 1971.

“How can we not remember with gratitude our friends in need in Tripura and India?”

She said Bangladesh’s freedom struggle was inspired by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who sacrificed his life struggling for the right of self-determination and socio-economic emancipation of the repressed people.

The premier said Bangabandhu wanted to see them free from grinding poverty to the state of prosperity based on democracy which, he believed, was the essence of empowering people that in turn was vital for the establishment of justice, peace, and development.

“Growing up with his undeterred beliefs and watching his endless and painful struggle against all obstacles, I, and our entire family, shared his pains and sufferings as well as his aspirations.”

Hasina said she had also learned from Bangabandhu the importance of secularism and inclusiveness in the society of all peoples, irrespective of their race or religion.

“These were his beliefs for empowerment of the people, and these remained deeply embedded in my mind, and thus in my government,” she said.

The Prime Minister said that during over half a century in politics with relentless struggle against military and quasi-military rulers, it was her father’s dream and beliefs that motivated her struggle for democracy.

“Poverty is our one and only enemy, and our target should be to eliminate it.”

She said although national efforts are important, but without an excellent network of connectivity of roads, railways, waterways, and people to people contact, it is not possible to succeed in eliminating poverty.

Hasina said physical connectivity with countries in the South Asian region and beyond has become a major drive of her foreign policy.

She said the issue of the connectivity was an important part of her discussions with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during her visit to New Delhi in January 2010.

The Prime Minister said she is convinced that the connectivity, particularly with the neighboring northeastern Indian states, including Tripura, would generate tremendous economic vibrancy, and consequently, peoples’ empowerment and overall development of this region.

She mentioned the initiatives such as Akhaura-Agartala rail link; operation of Ashuganj as a multi-modal transshipment point under Protocol of IWTT for transportation of Indian goods to Agartala; transportation of ODC for the Palatana Power Station; the bridge over the Feni River; use of Chittagong and Mongla ports by India; operation of the Ramgarh-Sabroom Land Customs Station; and border haats, when implemented, would enhance Tripura’s development.

“Bangladesh is happy to be a part of this exciting future for we believe that we must work, grow and prosper together for the overall good of our peoples,” Hasina told the convocation ceremony.

Later, Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Human Resources Development and Science & ICT Kapil Sibal distributed gold medals among six students of Tripura University for their outstanding academic feats.
