Hartal supporters run amok in Gazipur, N’ganj

Pro-hartal elements torched four vehicles and exploded around 42 crude bombs in Gazipur and Narayanganj on Sunday evening ahead of the 60-hour hartal to be enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance at 6am on Monday.

 

In Gazipur, hartal supporters torched a bus and a covered van on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Bhogra Bypass intersection in the city around 7:15pm.

 

Driver of the bus, Rokan, also received burn injuries in the arson attack.

 

On the other hand, pro-hartal activists set a truck ablaze on Dhaka-Gazipur highway in Chandona area and a bus on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Naujur area in the evening. They also vandalised several vehicles there.

 

Hartal supporters blasted about 15-20 crude bombs in Shibbari, Bus stand, Masjid road and Jurpukur areas in the evening, creating an anarchy situation.

 

In Narayanganj, activists of the city unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal brought out a procession in support of the hartal in Patantuli area of Siddhirganj in sadar upazila around 7pm and torched a bus on Narayangaj-Adamjee-Demra road and vandalised at least four vehicles from the procession.

 

During the procession, the activists blasted 20-22 crude bombs and blocked the road for 15 minutes.

 

On information, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the unruly activists.

 

On Saturday, the BNP-led 18-party alliance called another 60-hour nonstop countrywide hartal from 6am on Monday to push for its demand for arranging the next election under a non-party administration.

 

The hartal programme will end at 6pm on Wednesday.
