Hartal progressing amid poor response

The BNP-led 18-party alliance called nationwide daylong hartal demanding withdrawal of all the ‘false’ cases filed against BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman is progressing in a relaxed way across the country today (Wednesday).

However, there were reports of bringing out processions by hartal supporters at many places in the capital.

At 5:45 am, Shibir activists brought out a procession in support of the hartal at Benasri Palli in Mirpur-10 and burnt tyres on the road. Later police dispersed them.

At the same time, Shibir activists brought out a procession from in front of Sony Cinema in Mirpur-2 and blocked the road by setting tyres afire.

Later, police drove them away from the area.

At 6:15am, Chhatra Dal activists brought out a procession in front of BG Press in Tejgaon industrial area and they moved away sensing police approach.

Chhatra Dal activists brought out a procession in support of the strike at Kuril Biswa Road at 6:30am.Police later chased them away.

At 7:35 am, Chhatra Dal activists brought out a procession at Segun Bagicha and police dispersed them by firing blank shots. Law enforcers arrested a man from the spot.

Chhatra Dal activists brought out a procession in front of Siddheshwari University College in Mauchak at 7:30 am.

At 7:40am, Juba Dal activists brought out a procession at Shadatpur in support of the hartal and police later dispersed it.

At 7:50am, Shibir activists brought out a procession in support of the hartal in Dhalpur area and two crude bombs were exploded there at that time.

At 6:50am, police dispersed a procession of Shibir activists at Dhulapar in support of the hartal while Chhatra Dal brought out a procession in Adabor area at 7.30am.

At 5:20 am, Jamaat activists brought out a procession at Battala intersection in Ajimpur in support of the hartal and two crude bombs were exploded from it.

At 5.30am, Jamaat activists brought out a procession in Mirhajirbagh area and police arrested four people from the spot while dispersing them.

There was no report of violent incident from anywhere of the country as of filling this report at 10.30am.

The 12-hour hartal is also meant for pressing the government to meet the opposition’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government system and to stop the growing repressive acts against its political opponents.

This is the second shutdown of the opposition alliance this week as it enforced another countrywide 12-hour lockdown programme on Sunday demanding withdrawal of a ban on meetings and rallies and restoration of the caretaker system.

Sources at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police said additional 10,000 police will be on duty in the city during the hartal hours on Wednesday to avert any untoward incident and ensure the security of people and their property.

Besides, plainclothes police with still and video cameras will be put on alert at a number of strategic points in the city during the hartal hours to identify the troublemakers.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) will also be posted at a number of places along with the police in uniform.
