Hanif hits out at BNP for silence over Mollah verdict

Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Wednesday said BNP leaders have got unnerved and shocked following the death sentence to war criminal and Jamaat leader Quader Mollah.

“BNP couldn’t give any reaction to the verdict against Quader Mollah. They’re tightlipped in this regard. It’s their political strategy. Journalists can’t reach BNP leaders over phone after the verdict against Quader Mollah because they’ve got speechless due to the death sentence to its cohort,” he said.

Hanif, also a special assistant to the Prime Minister, said this while addressing a rally of Jubo League Dhaka City unit (South) at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city.

Elated over the Mollah verdict, Hanif said, “People’s respect for the Supreme Court has enhanced with the verdict.”

Allowing the government’s appeal seeking death sentence for Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general Abdul Quader Mollah, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that the Jamaat leader be hanged for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
When the whole nation expressed its delight over the verdict, BNP seems to have got shocked and unnerved, the Awami League leader also said.

“The nation has waited for long for this verdict. We’ll free the nation from the blot and the curse of 30 lakh martyrs by executing the verdict of listed criminals,” Hanif added.

Pointing at the young leaders and activists of Jamaat-Shibir, the Awami League leader said, “Leave the company of war criminals. Why should you shoulder the responsibility of the war criminals? You need to be back on the path of progressive politics. If you don’t do so, you’ll be resisted through a movement.”

Jubo League chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury and general secretary Harun-Or-rashid, among others, spoke at the programme held with its Dhaka City unit south president Ismail Chowdhury in the chair.
