President-elect Abdul Hamid on Tuesday sought cooperation from all to discharge his functions saying “I am going to assume the responsibilities at a critical juncture of time”.

“I don’t know how to discharge my functions with dignity. I am seeking cooperation from all so I can perform my duties and leave the office [presidency] with dignity,” said Hamid, who will be sworn in Wednesday as the country’s 20th president.

He made the instant remarks in response to some senior ruling Awami League-led alliance lawmakers’ expectations that the newly elected president will play role in overcoming the growing

political crisis in the country.

Hamid was speaking at a reception programme at LD Hall of parliament building organised by the Parliament Secretariat in the honour of him as he was awarded this year the independence award for his contribution to country’s liberation war in 1971.

Prior to his address, HM Ershad, chief of Jatiya Party, a key component of AL-led ruling alliance, requested the newly elected president to take measure to create the atmosphere conducive to the election through discussion with all.

“We are going through a crisis. Darkness is ahead. The government is not changed without election. You [Hamid] invite all to talks. Let us search for light together,” said Ershad.

AL General Secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said the current year is a year of election. Everybody expects the newly elected president will unite the country, he said.

Veteran AL lawmaker Tofail Ahmed said all the political parties had expected to have Hamid as the president. So their desire was met by the election of Hamid as the president, he added.

Another AL senior lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta hoped Hamid will be able to take the country forward by brining people irrespective of their political ideology together.

Mayeenuddin Khan Badal, a legislator of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, a component of AL-led alliance, said the president is the symbol of unity of the nation. ”Everybody expects he will stand beside all people.”
