Hacked by BCL leader, Nargis in critical condition

Physicians at Square Hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday said the condition of Sylhet Government Women’s College student Khadiza Akhter Nargis was very critical.

Khadiza is now kept at intensive care unit after two second surgeries in the afternoon.

Square Hospital’s associate medical director Mirza Nazimuddin said Nargis was brought to the hospital in a critical condition. ‘Nargis had hemorrhage inside her skull and tendons of both hands were severed,’ he said while briefing newsmen.

Neurosurgery department of the hospital conducted surgery of the victim, daughter of Mashuk Miah of village Ausha in Sylhet.

The minister for home affairs, Asaduzzaman Khan, said the perpetrator would be brought to book.

Meanwhile, the victim’s uncle, Abdul Kuddus, filed a case against the lone accused, Badrul Alam, with Shah Paran police station this noon.

Badrul, son of Saidur Rahman of village Sonaigati under Chhatak in Sunamganj, was the final-year economics student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. He was also an assistant secretary of the university unit Chhatra League.

However, the Chhatra League claimed that Badrul had no relation with the organization as he joined a school as teacher. Membership of the organisation get automatically scrapped if anyone gets married or joins any job, the organisation claimed.

The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology as suspended Badrul’s studentship after the incident.

Witnesses said Badrul hacked Nargis indiscriminately with a machete on the campus of Sylhet Murari Chand College around 5:30pm on Monday after she appeared an examination.

Caught by locals, Badrul was given a good beating and later handed over to police.

Bashudeb Banik, additional deputy commissioner (south) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said the injured stalker was also admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.

The victim’s family sources said that in the past Badrul proposed her, but was rejected. He used to live at the victim’s family residence as a lodging tutor at that time.

Students of Murari Chand College went out on demonstration blocking Sylhet-Tamabil highway on Tuesday morning, demanding to arrest Badrul Alam, reports United News of Bangladesh.

The protesting students took position on the highway around 10:00am and blocked it.
They demanded justice and trial of Nargis’s attacker.
