Grenade attack cases: Charges framed against Tarique, others

A Dhaka court on Sunday framed charges against BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman and 29 other new accused in the two cases filed in connection with the August 21 grenade attack on Awami League rally in the city in 2004.

Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 passed the order in the morning.

The court earlier rejected discharge petitions filed on October 9 last year by 32 accused, now in jail.

Twenty-four people were killed and around 200 others injured in the grisly grenade attack on the Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city in August 2004.

Police filed two cases in this connection — one under the Explosives Act and another for murder.

A supplementary charge-sheet, submitted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka on July 3, 2011, named 30 more accused including Tarique Rahman, eldest son of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia; former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar; and secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, in the cases.

With the new names in the supplementary charge sheet, the number of charge-sheeted accused in the cases reached 52.

Twenty-two people, earlier accused in the first charge-sheet submitted on June 22, 2008, will also face the trial with the newly indicted accused.
