Govt turned desperate to manipulate upazila polls: BNP

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday alleged that the government has launched a crackdown on opposition leaders and activists to manipulate the upazila polls.

In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the current ‘illegal regime’ thinks that it will be able to cling to power for a long time if it can annihilate the opposition by unleashing the steamroller.

He issued the statement protesting the arrest of a number of BNP leaders and activists across the country, including BNP joint secretary general Mizanur Rahman Minu, Rajshahi City Corporation mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Meherpur district BNP president Amzad Hossain, Pirojpur district BNP senior vice-president Nazrul Islam Khan.

Fakhrul alleged that the government is arresting the BNP leaders and even the BNP-backed upazila polls candidates to scare people so that they do not go to polling stations to cast their votes.

He warned that people would not allow the government to implement its any evil design to snatch people’s verdict in the second phase of the polls. “No autocrat could stay in power challenging people’s power.”

The BNP spokesman said the government, sensing its imminent fall, is trying to hang onto power by obliterating its political opponents.

Fakhrul demanded the government immediately release the arrested BNP leaders withdrawing the ‘false’ cases filed against them.
