The government will set up two laboratories to test solar panel equipment in the country to ensure their quality.
“While one will be set up at BUET, the other one will come up at Dhaka University. The science laboratory venue is also under consideration,” a power division official told The Independent. Experts said people are being cheated by a section of solar panel suppliers in the absence of laboratories in the country. The power division is set to place a bill titled “Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) Act 2011” to set up a new authority for the promotion of renewable energy across the country. Nowadays, most people living in city or rural areas are compelled to buy solar panels as the government is set to reduce power consumption from grid.
“It is the responsibility of the government to ensure quality products in market. The government should set up labs and reduce tax on quality products so that local entrepreneurs can get access to the market,” said Professor Ijaz Hossain of BUET.
When the government can give power connections to new building projects on condition that any urban residential or commercial unit must have a solar power system that can supply 3 percent of the building’s total energy needs, it must ensure people’s right to get quality products from the market, said Dr Ijaz.
The use of renewable energy is growing fast in Bangladesh. About 1,200 solar home systems are being installed every day. Seventy MW of power comes from renewable sources.
“Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority(SREDA) will be formed as a nodal agency for renewable energy, its efficiency and conservation . Another agency called Bangladesh Energy Research Council (BERC) will also be set up,” said a power division official.
The government has planned to add 500 MW of renewable energy to the country’s power generation in the next two years.
The official added that the government has initiated a 500-MW solar power development program in response to ADBs plan for 3000 MW of solar power for member countries by 2012 by bringing down capex to make it affordable.
