Govt to be forced to hold election under non-party administration: BNP

Reiterating the opposition’s stance to boycott any unilateral election, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said they will force the government to arrange next polls under a non-party administration through a movement.

“Our position is clear we won’t take part in any lopsided election without restoration of the caretaker government. We’re on a movement and it’ll be intensified to realise our demand,” he told a discussion.

Pro-BNP professional body Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) organised the discussion styled ‘Politics of the Nationalist Forces and Tarique Rahman’ marking the 49th birthday of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.

Nazrul said the government wants to hold the next polls under a partisan administration as it fears the people of the country and BNP.

Mentioning that the current regime is hatching various plots to hang onto power, Nazrul Islam said as the ruling party has realised that it will face a debacle if the election is held under the non-party administration they are now resorting to evil-designs.

“But I say they’ll also run into trouble for not leaving power because history says that no people’s movement has gone in vein in the past,” he added.

About Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s speech in parliament that the President permitted her to lead the election-time government, he said, “How did the President permit a person (to lead the polls-time government), who didn’t resign? The premier is confusing people by making such remarks.”

BNP chairperson’s adviser Shawkat Mahmud, DAB secretary general AZM Zahid Hossain, and Ulema Dal president Hafez Abdul Malek, among others, spoke at the function held with DAB President Prof AKM Azizul Islam in the chair.
