Govt to ban Jamaat-Shibir for unleashing terror: Sheikh Selim

DHAKA, Feb 24: Frontline ruling party lawmaker Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim told the House on Sunday that the government was not going to ban religion-based political parties in the country. “Rather, the government will ban the Jamaat-e-Islami and its student organization for unleashing a reign of terror,” he stated. He requested the religion-based parties not to be worried as propaganda was being spread that the government would ban such political parties. “This is not true, we are not going to ban those parties,” he said.

He also mentioned that the process of banning the Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir is under way and they will be banned in time.

Regarding the write-up that was published in Bangla dailies Amar Desh and Naya Diganto to malign the Prophet (SM), he said that they had undermined the Prophet by publishing this.

Veteran politician Tofail Ahmed said the organization which tore the national flag and vandalized the Shaheed Minar has no right to engage in politics in the country. “It is high time to ban Jamaat-e-Islami,” he said.

Meanwhile, some lawmakers on Sunday opined that now is the appropriate time to ban the Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, the Islami Chhatra Shibir, as they are involved in militant and anti-state activities.

Standing on the point of order, the ruling party lawmaker elected from Comilla, Subid Ali Bhuiyan, said that a vested quarter is trying to create obstacles in the trial of the war criminals.

He further said the vested quarter is creating anarchic conditions across the country and for that reason they are carrying out subversive activities.
He also mentioned that Islam is the religion of peace and never permits vandalism and anarchy. He requested the government to take stern action in this regard immediately.

Independent lawmaker Fazlul Azim criticized the bloggers and a section of Muslims involved in Friday’s vandalism.

  1. By banning Jamaat – Shibir AL is only digging its own graves. They need to make sure there is enough place in the graveyard for them. All the best AL.

  2. In recent times, AL and Jubo League was also allegedly involved in vandalizing 200 Hindu households in Sirajganj. The Hindu community people had named names and said as their community refused to participate in the Independence Day marched organized by BAL. It would be interesting to know what Sk. Selim and Tofail Ahmed has to say on this!
