Leaders of Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh on Wednesday alleged that the government pushed its secretary general Junaid Babunagri towards death through torturing him on remand days after days in a planned way.

They said Babunagri was arrested and then put on remand for mental and physical tortures in a planned, way and his life is now at risk.

The Hefajat leaders held the government responsible for the current critical situation of Babunagri.

They came up with the remarks at a doa-mahfil arranged seeking early recovery of their secretary general.

The Hefajat leaders also said the government has played with his life in the name of extracting information and a confessional statement.

They alleged that the government put pressure on the lawyers to grant bail seeing Babunagri at critical stage.

City unit convener Maulana Nur Hossain Kashemi, Mufti Tayeb Hossain, Abdur Rab Yusufi, Jafrullah Khan, Mahfuzul Haque, Abdullah Wasel, Abul Kashem and Fazlul Karim Kashemi, among others, addressed the doa-mahfil.

On Tuesday evening, the Hefajat leader, who was arrested by plainclothes police from Lalbagh Shahi Mosque in the capital on May 6, was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Birdem Hospital on Tuesday afternoon as his condition deteriorated following a leg surgery.

Babunagri was sent to jail on May 21 after he made a confessional statement before a magistrate of Dhaka CMM court disclosing that activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir tried to use Hefajat’s May 5 Shapla Chattar rally for ousting the government.

A total of 26 cases were filed with Paltan and Motijheel police stations over the violence during the May 5 Dhaka siege programme of Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh.
