Govt maneuvering to promulgate state of emergency: Rafiqul

BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah on Friday accused the government of crafting an ‘evil design’ to promulgate a state of emergency in its last-ditch effort to hang onto power.

“There’s no scope for promulgating the state of emergency unless a severe natural disaster or turmoil hits the country, but the government is maneuvering to promulgate emergency to prolong its power,” he said.

Rafiqul came up with the allegation while addressing a discussion and milad mahfil arranged by Nagarik Sangsad at the Jatiya Press Club marking the 69th birthday of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The BNP leader alleged that the government brought the 15th amendment to the constitution with a motive to perpetuate its power. “They (AL leaders) are saying that the Prime Minster will stay in office on completion of her tenure. But there’s no scope for hanging onto power after the end of a five-year term.”

He reminded the opposition leaders and activists that the ruling party is deliberately trying to push the country into a deep crisis. “They won’t be able to do this if we stay on the streets.”

There is no alternative to carrying out a strong-street movement, Rafiqul said, calling upon his party men to be more active for establishing people’s basic rights and realising the demand for restoration of the caretaker government.

“Those thinking to go to power without movement are choosing the wrong path. The government will have to be compelled to concede to our demand through a vigorous movement,” he added.

Recalling the role of the BNP chief in politics, he said had Khaleda not been in politics after the death of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman BNP would have no existence in the country as the mainstream political party.

He also cut a big cake marking the opposition leader’s birthday.

Born on August 15, 1945, Khaleda turned 69 on Thursday.

  1. IF YOU VOTE FOR THE 18 PARTY ALLIANCE THEY WILL MAKE THIS COUNTRY PAKISTAN AGAIN, WILL KILL OUR PEOPLE, RAPE OUR WOMEN. Her (Begun Zia’s) body is in Bangladesh , her heart in Pakistan that’s why she wants to save the war criminals” -Hasina:

It is not a political but most vindictive, uncivilised, unacceptable assault on the choice , integrity, wisdom & intelligentsia of politically matured Bangladeshi electorates who elected BNP three times and Begun Khaleda Zia twice as their prime minister to govern the country.

Awami League & its communist allies secret proposal to BNP to (1) leave the Jamaat, Hefajat & (2) do not defend the war criminals . If you do so, we will consider your proposal of a caretaker government. Awamis back is against he wall.. This proposal speaks of their sheer desperation. They are already defeated. Now the time is nigh for them to die.
