Govt is scared: BNP

A senior BNP leader has alleged the government banned all political meetings for a month because it is scared to fight the opposition politically.

“The government is scared of the people and the opposition,” Standing Committee member Goyeshar Chandra Roy said at a discussion on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs in a statement on Sunday said the government would not allow any political rally or meeting for a month in the wake of cyclone Mahasen as a precautionary measure against any acts of sabotage or violence.

Shedding light on the political scenario, the BNP leader said, “The government is politicising the judiciary and administration.”

He also accused the ruling Awami League ministers of giving varying statements over the nature of polls-time government.

The stand-off over the election-time government has led to the political deadlock and a span of violence. Pressure has been building on both sides to thrash out a solution to the damaging political conflict.

The opposition has been on the streets since the constitutional provision of a non-partisan caretaker government was annulled in 2011, claiming elections under a party-led administration will not be ‘free and fair’.

Hasina has said she is open to an all-party administration but has ruled out handing over power to unelected caretakers.
