Govt hurting chances of dialogue: BNP

The BNP has alleged the government is snuffing out possibilities of a dialogue to end the political impasse by arresting opposition leaders and activists.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, an Advisor to Chairperson Khaleda Zia, also condemned re-arrest of three of its central leaders after they were released on bail.

”The people of the country believed talks will take place. But the Prime Minister has poured cold water on the hopes,” he said.

Amid a stand-off between the two major political parties over the nature of the election-time government, discussions for a dialogue to end it kicked off early this month.

The opposition has been on the streets since the constitutional provision of a non-partisan caretaker government was annulled in 2011, claiming elections under a party-led administration will not be ‘free and fair’.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on May 2 asked Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia for the dialogue.

Later, Khaleda urged the government to restore caretaker government system first. But Hasina has said the system will never be restored.

“First we are offered dialogue and later they (government) announce it will not take place,” said Dudu.

”I’d like to tell the Prime Minister that time is running out. A time will come when you will have no time for talks anymore….the issue will be settled on the streets then,” he said.

He alleged the government was not practising politics. ”The detectives are arresting our leaders and activists from the jail gate in new cases moments after they are released on High Court orders.”

He alleged the government have almost turned the country into a police state.

Joint General Secretary Amanullah Aman, Khaleda’s Advisor AZM Zahid Hossain and another Joint Secretary General Mohammad Shahjahan were rearrested the moment they had stepped out of Kashimpur jail on Tuesday evening.

Several leaders and activists of BNP including the President of its youth front Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal have been arrested in similar fashion.

”Both the police and court know the cases are false and fabricated,” Dudu claimed.
