Govt doesn’t want dialogue: BNP

BNP doubts whether the government is sincere about its offer of a dialogue to break the stalemate ahead of the next general election.

“The recent atrocities by the government indicate that they don’t want dialogue. They don’t want a peaceful resolution to conflicts. The government will have to make it clear whether it is sincere about talks,” BNP’s Advisor Shamsuzzaman Dudu said Wednesday.

The United Nations Assistant Secretary General had provided some hope by meeting with the Prime Minister and opposition leader during his visit, he said.

UN’s Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, who spend four days in Dhaka (Friday-Monday)had advised the leading political parties to ‘instantly’ go for a dialogue to break the impasse.

Taranco handed over letters from the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had invited the opposition to dialogue but BNP set a pre-condition saying the government will have to promise to reinstate the caretaker government first.

Dudu an advisor to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia condemned the government’s refusal to provide BNP permission to hold a rally on Wednesday.

“Leaders and activists are being obstructed from entering their political office. We want to know – does the government think this office is a sub- jail? Is the BNP banned? The government will have to be clear about this.”

He demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina saying, “Only one person is responsible for the state the country is in. There will be no conflict in the country if she resigns.”

Shamsuzzaman Dudu also claimed the opposition is being abused and government is restricting them from holding rallies.
