Govt declared war against people, says Fakhrul

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday alleged that the government has declared a war against people by continuing mass killing across the country.

“People are being killed in firing like birds. Police and Rab members opened fire on people in Chapainawabganj and Sirajganj in the name of capturing criminals and killed five people on Friday. The government has apparently declared a war against people,” said the BNP leader.
Fakhrul brought the allegation at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office at noon.
The BNP leader alleged that police first fired without any provocation in Chapainawabganj and Sirajganj and then people built a resistance.
He said the BNP-led 18-party alliance will announce the next course of action programmes after a meeting of the alliance leaders on Sunday night.
Voicing anger over the aggressive attitude of law enforcers, Fakhrul said a volatile situation has been prevailing in the country. “The government in a planned way is pushing the country towards anarchy…they’re filing thousands of false cases against opposition leaders and activities.”
The BNP leader came down heavily on Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir for his remarks that police will not sit idle if common people are killed in front of them.
Fakhrul said, “His (Home Minister) remarks are nothing but a mockery. Stop such killing and form judicial probe in this regard and find out the culprits.”
“The way it’s oppressing people, it seems the government has taken scorch-earth policy. The present situation defeated the days of darkness of the mediaeval age. Now Bangladesh has become a death valley,” he added.
Meanwhile, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia convened a meeting of the 18-party alliance on Sunday night to finalise the alliance’s next course of action programmes to force the government to release its leaders and activists arrested from BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in a police raid on it on March 11 and mount pressure on the current regime either to restore caretaker government or quit.
Earlier, the BNP chief held a meeting with her party’s senior leaders on Thursday night.
The meeting decided to enforce a fresh nationwide hartal on Tuesday with an ultimatum to call another 36-hour hartal from April 8 to press home their various demands, including the release of the opposition leaders and activists.
The meeting also decided that the BNP-led 18-party will hold a grand rally in the city on April 15.
