Govt conspiring to finish opposition: Moudud

Senior BNP leader Moudud Ahmed on Friday alleged that the government was conspiring to ‘suppress democracy’ and ‘obliterate the opposition’ by using police forces.

“The government is rooting for conflict and has managed to enforce state terrorism through police. Raid at BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters, vandalism and arrest of over 150 leaders and activists are examples of that,” he said.

The former Law Minister said, “The people will not allow the conspiracy to suppress democracy with the help of police to succeed. We want to say that there is still time, be careful as you [government] will have to pay if democracy is threatened.”

The BNP leader was addressing a panel discussion at the National Press Club in the capital.

Stating that the rule of law and democracy were absent in the country, the BNP leader said, “The government is pushing the country towards anarchy through misconduct and bad governance.”

Moudud also hailed the BNP- and Jamaat-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad (JAOP) for its landslide victory in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections.

The opposition-backed panel won 13 of the 14 posts up for grab, including those of the President and General Secretary, spelling yet another electoral debacle for the ruling Awami League-backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannaya Parishad (SASP). The SASP managed to win only one Executive Member’s post.

Former Attorney General AJ Muhammad Ali and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon of JAOP were elected President and General Secretary, respectively, of the SCBA
