“They don’t have any ground beneath their feet,” he said at a discussion on Friday. “It is about time they fell. They’re now trying to prevent that by abusing our leaders and activists.”

He said abductions, enforced disappearances and political killings were on the rise.

“I can firmly say the government can no longer use the barrel of the gun to prevent its downfall,” said Rizvi.

The discussion at National Press Club was organised by the Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sanskritik Sangstha to observe the 38th death anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Rizvi urged people to take lessons from the fiery songs the rebel poet had written to fight the then government.

He also pointed to some recent comments by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“It is natural that there will be opposing views and criticisms. But the government has a tendency to get overexcited. We never get to hear anything good coming out of the prime minister’s lips … she is always talking about murder or killings.”

He said the humanitarian people around the world were rising up to protest forced disappearances, known as ‘Gum’ in Bangla.

“The world will observe International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. We will too,” said the BNP leader.

The BNP has already announced a countrywide human chain programme against such disappearances on Saturday.
