Govt blamed for ‘unbridled corruption’

Dhaka, Nov 8 (bdnews24.com) – BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday accused the government of turning the country into a haven of corruption.

Alamgir, the party’s acting Secretary General, said because of pervasive corruption by the administration of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina it has become impossible to govern the country.

He made the statement at an assembly of Mahila Dal, BNP’s women affairs wing, in the city. Some 250 representatives from 250 units of the wing attended the meeting in Dhaka’s Engineers’ Institution.

Alamgir blamed the government for ‘looting’ small investors’ money from the capital market while said that Hall-Mark scam, Padma bridge scams and corruption in rental power plants have pushed the country into a ‘critical condition’.

“This is impossible to apply law in the country (under this situation),” he said.

Alamgir, a junior minister in Khaleda Zia’s 2001-2006 Cabinet, said the government was hatching conspiracy to stick to power at any cost.

“They are planning to hold a one-party election by preventing national leaders of the party (BNP) from contesting next elections,” he said.

He was also critical of the government for curbing authority of Grameen Bank’s Board of Directors.

“The government has gone against women through this. Women are deprived of the power and right to constitute the Board of Directors of Grameen Bank. It is not acceptable,” he added.

He asked Mahila Dal to be united to remove the government.
