Govt asks EC for necessary steps to hold DCC polls

The government on Monday asked the Election Commission to take necessary steps to hold elections to the bifurcated Dhaka City Corporation as their demarcation complexities have been settled, reports United News of Bangladesh.

‘The Local Government Ministry sent a letter to the Election Commission this afternoon. The ministry requested the EC to hold the polls in the two DCCs, as now there’s no delimitation complexity,’ EC secretary Sirajul Islam said.
LGRD additional secretary Ashok Madhab Roy also confirmed of sending the letter to the EC saying that now there is no bar to holding the polls.
The city dwellers have not seen DCC election for more than 12 years as the last polls in the integrated city corporation were held on April 25, 2002. The five-year tenure of the elected DCC body expired on May 14, 2007.
On November 29, 2011, the government formed two city corporations — DNCC and DSCC — in the capital splitting the integrated DCC into two administrative zones.
On April 9, 2012, CEC Rakibuddin announced the election schedules for the split DCCs, fixing May 24, 2012 as date for voting. But, a writ petition stalled the election process halfway through. Later, the court quashed the legal bar to the election on May 13, 2013.
But fresh complexities arose over the demarcation of the DSCC and DNCC as the Local Government Ministry proposed extending the peripheries of the city corporations.

  1. Yes; this is the right time for AL to hold elections.
All BNP leaders are in jail or are hiding to save their lives. Awami Leaders are intimidating all opposition with death and other physical threats. Oh; what a beautiful time to have this election! Like the January 2014 national election, this will be a gland slam. Our Bangladeshi intellectual and others are just on-lookers. Shame on the entire nation. Bengalis are spineless people. They are allowing the AL goons to do whatever they please. Awami League will destroy Bangladesh.
