The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday said that the ruling Awami League is more keen to control BNP rather than the COVID-19.

Issuing a statement, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that failing to implement the unplanned lockdown, the government had resorted to torturing people.

‘A public servant tortured a shop worker in presence of a high official at Saltha in Faridpur on February 5. When people brought out processions against the torture, police attacked them and a protester was killed in police firing,’ Fakhrul said, adding that later police filed a case against 4,000 people.

Among the named 88 accused in the case, most are leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies while 21 of them have already been arrested, Fakhrul said.

He said that the local administration was harassing BNP activists in Saltha while the media reported that AL people were behind the violence.

He said that the COVID-19 situation is going out of control for the negligence and failure of the government.

He said that the government had no realistic and organised plan to fight back the virus but it continued harassing people to implement the lockdown.

He said that the government has no accountability to the people as it was not elected by the people.

Besides, BNP’s Faridpur divisional organising secretary Shama Obaid demanded unconditional release of the arrested BNP activists in Faridpur and withdrawal of the case.
