Gazipur series bomb attack 17 JMB men jailed for 10 years

Seventeen militants of banned Islamic organization Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (JMB) have been jailed for 10 years in 2005 series bomb attack in Gazipur.

Dhaka-4 Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Abdur Rahman Sardar passed the order on Monday.

The convicts are: Md Rokanuzzaman alias Rokan, Md Mamunur Rashid, Arifur Rahman, Md Nijam, Asad alias Jahangir, Durul Huda, Md Mahbubul Alam, Md Jahirul Islam, Md Adam, Md Kawser, Omar Faruq, Md Rasel, Abdul Quafi, M A Siddique Bablu, Rana alias Abdul Sattar, Masum alias Abdul Rauf and Raihan alias Obayed.

Of them Rusel, Abdul Quafi, MA Siddique Bablu, Masum alias Abdur Rauf, Rana alias Abdul Sattar, Raihan alias Obayed were tried in absentia.

The tribunal also fined them Tk10,000 each, in default, they would have to suffer one more year of rigorous imprisonment.

The tribunal also acquitted four more JMB men—Md Hasan (fugitive), Md Mahbubur Rahman alias Mahbub, Md Nurul Islam and Md Tayabur Rahman —as charges brought against them could not be proved.

On August 17 in 2005, JMB militants carried out series bomb attack at Gazipur Deputy Commissioner’s office as part of their countrywide bomb attack.

Sub Inspector Md Mahfuzur Rahman, filed a case with Jaydebpur police station against unknown persons on the same day.

The investigation officer of the case the then SI Gazi Ruhul Amin of Joydevpur police station pressed charge sheet before the court on October 12, 2005 bringing allegation against 23 JMB members.

Later the case was sifted to speedy trail tribunal-4 for quick trial through the approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2012.

The same court on February 19, 2012, indicted 21 JMB men as the JMB chief Shaykh Abdur Rahman and his brother Ataur Rahman Sani had hanged in another case.
