Four killed as crane falls apart in city

At least four people were killed as a crane fell apart while pulling an overturned truck in the city’s Jurain area on Sunday night.

Shafiqur Rahman, a sub-inspector at Shyampur Police Station, said the crane collapsed while lifting the goods-laden overturned truck in front of Setu Market in Jurain around 9pm, killing three people on spot and injuring at least six others.

Three of the deceased were identified as Joynal Abedin, 37, son of Abdur Rahman of Bakerganj upazial in Barisal, Miznur Rahman Howlader, 32, son of Ruhul Amin Howlader of Dashmina upazila of Patuakhali and Tareq, 8, a student of class II. They were said to be onlookers.

Of them, Tareq died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The fourth victim, aged about 32, could not be identified yet. The bodies were sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The injured were admitted to different city hospitals.
