Film festival concludes at Biswa Sahitya Kendra

The six-day film festival conclude at the  Biswa Sahitya Kendra in the city on Thursday.
Biswa Sahitya Kendra, in association with Unesco, has organised the event to give the younger generation a chance to enjoy a number of  famous films.
Defying the opposition’s 48-hour road blockade, a large number of audience flocked to the carnival everyday to enjoy the films.
A total of 16 films like ‘Walking With Cavemen’, ‘March of the Penguins’, ‘The Circus’, ‘Ratatouille’, ‘Khuda Ke Liye’, ‘Meghe Dhaka Tara’, ‘Less Miserable’, ‘Africa’, ‘Vertical Limit’, ‘Battle of Britain’, ‘The Cranes are Flying’ and ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ were screened on the occasion.
Earlier, Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury inaugurated the festival at a gala opening ceremony as chief guest on Saturday.
Secretary of Bangladesh National Commisssion for Unesco M Manjur Hossain and President of Biswa Sahitya Kendra Prof Dr Abdullah Abu Sayed addressed the ceremony, among others.
The internationally-acclaimed films such as ‘The Cranes Are Flying’ of Mikhail Kalatozov, ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ of Lewis Milestone and Carol Reed and ‘Jalsagar’ of Satyajit Ray- were screened at the festival on Wednesday.
‘The Cranes Are Flying’ is a Russian film based on the World War II. It depicts the cruelty of war and the damage suffered to the Soviet psyche as a result of the World War II that is known in the then Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War.
The film was directed at Mosfilm by the Georgian-born Soviet director Mikhail Kalatozov and written by Viktor Rozov in 1957.
The cast of the film includes Aleksey Batalov, Tatiana Samoilova and Vasili Merkuryev, among others. The film won the Palme d’Or at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival, the only Soviet film to win that award.
‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ is a film starring Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard based on the novel Mutiny on the Bounty by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall.
The film retells the real-life mutiny aboard HMAV Bounty led by Fletcher Christian against the ship’s captain, William Bligh.
‘Jalsaghar’ is the fourth feature film directed by Satyajit Ray. The shooting was done at Nimtita Raajbari in Nimtita village, 10 kilometres away from Murshidabad.
‘Jalsaghar’ is a narration of the final days of a Zamindar in Bengal. The landlord, namely Roy (Chhabi Biswas), is just an other-worldly man who loves to spend time in listening to music and putting up spectacles rather than managing his crop fields ravaged by floods and the abolition of Zamindari system by the Indian government.
This is the tale of a Zamindar who has nothing left but respect and sacrifices his family and wealth trying to retain it.
The cast of the play includes Chhabi Biswas, Padma Devi, Pinaki Sen Gupta, Gangapada Bose, Tulsi Lahari, Kali Sarkar, Ustad Waheed Khan, Roshan Kumari and Begum Akhtar, among others.
