Fazle Kabir has been appointed as Bangladesh Bank governor, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said.
Kabir has been serving Sonali Bank as chairman.
Fazle Kabir, former finance secretary, will join his job after returning home from New York, USA on March 18, the minister said.
The appointment came hours after the resignation of Atiur Rahman as BB governor.
Until Kabir’s return to home, Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Abul Kashem will serve the central bank as acting governor, said Muhith.
On Tuesday morning, Atiur submitted the resignation letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at PMO in the wake of the recent hacking of Bangladesh Bank’s reserve fund, PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim told the Dhaka Tribune.
On February 4, hackers stole more than $80 million from Bangladesh Bank’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and wired it to bank accounts in the Philippines.
