BNP is the first Bangladeshi party to become a member of the democracy advocacy organization

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected one of the three vice-chairmen of Asia Pacific Democrat Union (APDU) as the organization gave BNP full membership.

At a meeting of the APDU Council held in Colombo on Friday, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected chairman of the union while New Zealand National Party President Peter Goodfellow Deputy Chairman.

BNP’s International Affairs Secretary Humayun Kabir represented BNP at the conference.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Shairul Kabir Khan a member of the BNP chairperson’s press wing, said: “As far as I know, we are the first political party from Bangladesh to receive APDU’s membership.

“BNP applied to be a member of the APDU nearly a year back when we were just an associate member. The latest APDU council meeting upgraded BNP’s status from an associate to full member.

“India’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is also a member of this organization,” he added.
