Fakhrul denounces remand, arrest of BNP leaders

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday denounced the remand order against its top five leaders and the arrest of two Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal leaders.

In separate statements, the BNP spokesperson demanded withdrawal of ‘false’ cases filed against the BNP leaders and cancellation of the remand and their release.

A Dhaka court on Thursday placed top five BNP leaders –- Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, Abdul Awal Mintoo and Shimul Biswas -– on an eight-day remand in two cases.

On the other hand, Detective Branch of police arrested Swechchhasebak Dal general secretary Mir Sharafat Ali Sapu and its organising secretary Shafiul Bari Babu in the afternoon.

The government is actually exacting vengeance on people by placing the senior BNP leaders on remand, Fakhrul said in a statement.

He also condemned the recent series of bomb explosions targeting the residences of opposition leaders, claiming that the ‘government agents’ are attempting sabotages across the country by conducting criminal activities.

The BNP acting secretary general said the arrests, remands or criminal attacks on the opposition leaders will not come to any help to the government to stop the opposition’s movement.

The oppressive acts will only strengthen the protest of the opposition against the undemocratic and inhuman activities of the government, he said.
