Voicing his utter frustration over the recent spate of child repression, Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Thursday said the government should apologise to the nation over a baby being shot in her mother’s womb during a clash between two groups of ruling party men in Magura.
‘Eleven a baby in its mother’s womb is not safe now. I cannot imagine how much brutal we have become. A baby was shot in mother’s womb! How come it happens?’ he said.
Ershad, a former president, was talking to reporters at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after visiting the bullet-hit baby Suraiya and her mother Nazma Khatun.
‘Those responsible for it should be tried for their attempt to kill the baby in her mother’s womb. But I do not know whether they will be tried…The government should apologise to the nation for it,’ he said.
The baby was injured when her eight-month pregnant mother was shot in the abdomen during a factional clash of ruling party’s youth wing Juba League faction on July 23 in Magura.
The bullet went through the unborn baby’s right shoulder and damaged her right eye. She survived a two-hour caesarean section on her 35-year-old mother at Magura General Hospital.
The baby was moved to the DMCH on July 26 as her condition stated to be critical.
Ershad, also the prime minister’s special envoy, expressed concern over the recent incidents of torture and killing of children. ‘Newspapers are everyday replete with reports on child repression. Around 676 children were killed in the last three years. These incidents are taking place as the perpetrators know it very well that nothing will happen to them.’
He called upon the government to arrest those involved in the incidents and mete out exemplary punishment to them. ‘Give them stern punishment so that no one dares to repeat such incidents.’
