Jatiya Party Presidium member and Leader of the Opposition Rawshan Ershad on Sunday criticised the party chairman, HM Ershad, for taking decisions unilaterally and changing his mind frequently.

She also warned Ershad, also her husband, not to misuse power as the party chief.

“The authority has been given to you through the party constitution. Do not do everything at your own whims. This should end,” a Presidium member who attended the joint meeting quoted Rawshan as saying.

Several Presidium members of the party and MPs of the 10th parliament joined the meeting held at Spectra Convention Centre in the capital.

Ershad, now a special envoy to the prime minister, also faced questions by a number of Presidium members who had withdrawn nomination papers upon his order. Rawshan said they had taken part in the election upon the party chief’s directives.

Without mentioning names, Rawshan also came down heavily on the party chief for inducting on his own some paid employees of the party as its senior leaders.

“How can a person who you pay salary get party leadership? You have to recognise them either as party men or employees,” she was quoted by a leader who was at the meeting.

Ershad’s once press secretary and then political secretary Sunil Shubho Roy became Presidium member three years ago. He contested the January 5 poll but failed to become a lawmaker. Bobby Hajjaj who was the head of JaPa’s research and strategy wing later became special adviser to Ershad. During the poll, he was made Ershad’s special spokesperson and election coordinator.

Rawshan said when someone was given an important post in the party, “it hampers the party’s image. In future, the Jatiya Party will have to expand after getting opinion of the party men.”

Blaming Ershad for the party’s current situation, Rawshan said he had been managing employees of the party, not its leaders. “Jatiya Party could not do well in the upazila polls compared to other parties only because of your mismanagement.”

JaPa bagged three chairman and three vice-chairman posts in the five-phase polls completed recently.

Rawshan also expressed frustration as there had been no council in the party in the last 12 years, and that none of the party’s units had a full-fledged committee. She also criticised the party chief for not giving the district- and upazila-level leaders time when they came to see him in the capital.

Party’s Secretary General Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, and Presidium members Anisul Islam Mahmood, Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Golam Habib and Salma Islam were present at the meeting.

However, GM Quader, younger brother of Ershad and also a Presidium member, former secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader and Presidium Member TI Fazle Rabby did not attend the meeting.

Ershad eyes better

In the face of severe criticisms by both his wife and other senior leaders, apparently soft Ershad said: “Let us forget everything and work together to strengthen the party.”

Meeting sources confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that the party decided to hold upazila, district and central councils before December this year to elect new leadership.

Before joining the meeting, Ershad told reporters that in the future the party would work with everyone’s assistance, not with one’s personal decisions.

“Jatiya Party is now fully organised after passing lot of ups and downs since ‘90s,” he said. Mentioning that he had faced 74 cases, the former military dictator said: “I always had to do shackled politics.”

Secretary General Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu said: “Ershad is a symbol of struggle and development of the party. He did many development works during his regime. No contemporary leader of his time was in jail like him.”

He also hoped to form government in the future.

  1. Ershad and his wife are both frauds and should been prosecuted a long time ago. But cozy Hasina finds him and her to be cozy allies, just to remain in power. Hasina gives a crap about Bangladeshi people, Bangladesh as a whole and Bangladeshi history. She is too busy making her father the “father of the nation” cult figure while most Bangladeshis detest it. She should have a referendum to prove I am wrong. She will not do it. Instead she connives with India and Ershad and his crazy stupid wife to rule Bangladesh through dictatorial schemes. Khaleda is not better either as she bid for Ershad many times just to win elections. She lost out and accepted despicable Jamaat as an ally. We have to get rid of these leaders and re-start like a computer program. Bangladesh needs another struggle for real independence. These people and their cronies are ruining our country.
