Ershad doubtful over JP’s role as opposition

Expressing doubt whether his party would be able to play a strong role as opposition in parliament, Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Saturday said it would have been better had his party not joined the cabinet.

“Everybody, even me, has got a question in his or her mind about the opposition’s role in the 10th parliament. But the Prime Minister thinks we would be able to oppose government activities though we’re in the government of national consensus,” he said.

The former military dictator, now a special envoy to the Prime Minister, said this while addressing the inaugural programme of annual sports competition of Banani Bidyaniketan School and College.

Mentioning that the main work of the opposition is to criticise the government’s activities as it benefits the government and people, Ershad said, “It would be better not to take ministership. But now it has become our duty to criticise the government’s activities as we have taken ministership.”

The former president said that he does not like such student politics that destroys the students.
