Election materials snatched, torched in 8 dists

Opposition activists swooped on polling centres, and snatched and torched election materials in Chittagong, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Comilla, Jhenidah, Rajshahi, Bhola and Rangpur districts on Saturday on the eve of the 10th general election.

 

In Chittagong, anti-election activists swooped on five polling centres and set afire election materials in Chaddaha and Demsa unions under Satkania upazila of the district.

 

Three on-duty policemen were also injured when they tried to resist the attackers.

 

Witnesses said a group of 40-50 opposition men attacked a van carrying police and Ansar members at makeshift polling centre at local Mohammadia Madrasah in Chaddaha union as soon as the law enforcers reached the centre with election materials in the afternoon.

 

Later, the aggrieved opposition activists snatched election equipment from the centre and also beat up the law enforcers, leaving three of them injured.

 

At the same time, two polling centres set up at Dakshin Charti Government Primary School and Chhadaha Churamoni Gorvernment Primary School in the union also came under attack.

 

The attackers set afire the two centres before snatching election materials.

 

In separate incident, opposition men also carried out attack on two makeshift polling stations each in Demsa and Chaddaha unions and snatched election equipment in the evening.

 

In Nilphamari, Jamaat-Shibir activists equipped with sharp weapons carried out an attack on a polling centre set up at Brahmanpar Government Primary School in Jaldhaka upazila and snatched ballot boxes.

 

They also attacked the on-duty policemen, leaving three of them injured, said Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jaldhaka Police Station.

 

In Gaibandha, opposition activists snatched and set fire to election materials, including ballot papers and boxes, of seven polling centres in Sadullahpur upazila on Saturday afternoon.

 

Shafiqul Alam, Presiding Officer of Kunjumohipur Primary School polling centre, alleged that BNP led 18-party activists swooped on police and Ansar members around 4:30 pm when they were taking the election materials in a human haluer to Kunjumohipur Primary School polling centre from Sadullahpur upazila parishad.

 

He said the attackers looted 3,100 ballot papers and seven boxes from them and torched all the materials.

 

Meanwhile, Sabdar Rahman, Presiding Officer of Tajnagar Primary School polling centre said the anti-election activists attacked them around 5pm when the law enforcers were taking the election materials to Tajnagar Primary School polling centre from Sadullahpur upazila parishad.

 

They beat them up the law enforcers and set fire to the election materials.

 

In Comilla, BNP and Jamaat-Shibir activists snatched election materials from a polling centre in Saraspur union under Monohorganj upazila in the evening.

 

When law enforcers resisted the opposition men, they locked a clash with the former which left at least four people including a union level Jubo Dal leader bullet-hit.

 

The opposition men blasted 10 crude bombs during the clash.

 

In Rangpur, miscreants snatched all the ballot papers and boxes in three polling centres in Pirgachha upazila around 8:30pm.

 

Similar incidents were also reported from Jhenidah, Rajshahi and Bhola districts.
