Ekram supporters torched Fulgazi AL leader Belal’s house

Supporters of slain Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque on Monday attacked the house of local Awami League leader Belayet Hossain Belal at Islampur village and set it on fire suspecting his involvement in the gruesome murder.

 

Police and witnesses said around 40-50 Ekram’s followers attacked the house of Belal, a member of Anandapur union parishad and the union unit Awami League president, around 11am.

 

The rowdy Ekram supporters vandalised furniture and valuables of the house before torching it pouring petrol. The fire spread to five other houses damaging those.

 

They also set fire to two straw piles of Belal in front of the house.

 

Belal reportedly fled the house sensing danger as the angry Ekram’s supporters were marching towards it.

 

On information, firefighters rushed in and doused the flame after one and a half hours frantic efforts with the help of police.

 

District Police Super Poritosh Ghosh confirmed the incident.

 

Informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, Fulgazi Police Station officer-in-charge- Abu Naser said.

 

According to him, six houses were damaged in the fire.

 

However, no one was injured as the house inmates stormed out safely.

 

Earlier on Sunday evening, police arrested Awami League leader Jahed Chowdhury, one of the masterminds of Ekramul killing, at Barahipur in the district town.

 

On May 20, Ekramul was shot and burnt to death by miscreants in the academy area of the district town.

 

Ekram, also president of upazila Awami League, came under the attack by the miscreants, numbering 40-50, on his way to the upazila headquarters in his vehicle from his town residence.
