Ecnec approves 12 projects involving Tk 10,922cr

1,148 flats to be constructed for DCC cleaners

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Tuesday approved a project involving Tk 190 crore for constructing 1,148 flats for the cleaners of Dhaka City Corporation to facilitate their accommodation.

The approval came from an Ecnec meeting held at the NEC conference room at the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with its Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam said 12 development projects involving Tk 10,922 crore were approved today.

“Of the total cost, Tk 5,838 crore will come from the national exchequer while the remaining Tk 5,084 crore will come as project assistance,” he added.

Under the project titled ‘Construction of cleaner’s colony of Dhaka City Corporation’, as many as 13 ten-storey buildings would be constructed to accommodate the flats having an area of 472 square feet each, sources at the Planning Ministry said.

Ten out of these 13 buildings will be constructed at Dhaulpur and Dayagqnj and the remaining three at Sutrapur.

Earlier, in 2005, a project was approved to construct flats for DCC cleaners, which was canceled following the collapse of an under-construction building under the project. A Buet committee, formed to investigate the matter, found faults with the construction work at that time.

On completion of a spot investigation, the IMED of the Planning Ministry had also recommended rolling back the project. Under the new project, the buildings would be constructed at the previous spots of the existing three colonies removing nearly 22,475 feet piles.

Besides, about a 1.5 lakh-square feet building will have to be demolished and removed. The project is expected to be completed by June 2017.

The Ecnec meeting gave a nod to another project involving Tk 3,280 crore called ‘Coastal Embankment improvement project’ (Phase-1) aiming to rehabilitate and develop embankments in coastal area, and improve the internal irrigation system of different polders.

The project will cover 16 upazilas in Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Barguna and Patuakhali districts. The World Bank will provide the total cost (loan -3075 crore; grants-205 crore) of the project.

The other projects approved at the meeting are: ‘Secondary Education Stipend project’ (Tk 1,171 crore-GoB), ‘Physical Infrastructure development of selected non-government secondary schools project; (Tk 2,253 crore-GoB); ‘Construction of 2 ATIs (Agricultural Training Institute) at Buncharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria district and Saturia upazila of Manikgonj district’ (Tk 49 crore-GoB); ‘Modernisation of Sayedpur Railway workshop’ (Tk 157 crore, GoB-3 crore, PA-154 crore); “Infrastructure Improvement and Procurement of Vehicle & Equipment in Narayangonj City Corporation’ (Tk 182 crore-GoB); ‘Itna-Boroibari-Chamraghat road improvement project’ (Tk 109 crore-GoB); ‘Ujanchar-Bajitpur-Austogram road improvement project’ (Tk 134 crore-GoB); ‘Augmentation and Rehabilitation of Power Distribution System in Desco Area project’ (Tk 1,989 crore, GoB-Tk 883 crore, PA-1106 crore); ‘Construction of 132/33/11 KV Grid Substation in DESCO Area project’ (Tk 946 crore, GoB-Tk 402 crore, PA-Tk 544 crore) and ‘Construction of a fly over at Muradpur 2nd Gate and GEC Junction project’ (Tk 462 crore-GoB).
