EC got guidelines for polls from PM speech: Shah Nawaz

Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz on Sunday said the Election Commission has got the necessary “guidelines” over the next parliamentary elections from the Prime Minister’s address to the nation.

“We got the necessary legal guidelines for the election from the PM’s speech. We came to know through the speech that the election will be held by January 24 next. The polls will be held as per the Constitution,” he told reporters at his EC secretariat office.

Shah Nawaz, however, said it will depend on the political solution under which format of the government the election will be held.

The EC is now taking preparations for holding the election in line with the Constitution after having the “guidelines” from the Prime Minister’s address to the nation, he added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the nation on Friday at the fag end of her government’s tenure offering to form an all-party interim government to oversee the next general election.

Shah Nawaz also said the Commission will change the election code of conduct for political parties and candidates following the PM speech. “In the code of conduct, the level-playing field will be ensured for all –those who will be in power or outside power,” he noted.

“The draft code of conduct will be uploaded on the EC’s website and be sent to the registered political parties. It’ll be finalised after taking their (political parties) suggestions,” Shah Nawaz said.
