The Cabinet has given the final approval to the draft of ‘Bangladesh Citizenship Bill, 2016’, expanding the existing scope of getting dual citizenship by the Bangladeshi expatriates.

The approval opens doors for expatriate Bangladeshis staying in countries with which Bangladesh has diplomatic ties, except some prohibited states, for getting dual citizenship through Bangladesh government’s gazette notification.

The approval came from the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at the Prime Minister’s Office with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam briefed reporters after the meeting.

He said the proposed law has been rearranged after addressing the backdated issues and incompleteness of two existing laws –The Citizenship Act 1951 and the Bangladesh Citizenship Temporary Provisions Order 1972.

The Cabinet Secretary said that the law has six chapters and 28 sections, which highlighted the process for gaining citizenship, disqualification of getting citizenship, surrender and dissolution of citizenship.

He said that the law incorporated and expanded the scope for getting dual citizenship by the expatriate Bangladeshi nationals since the expatriate Bangladeshis staying in the United States and Britain have long been enjoying such facility.
