Don’t get confused with remarks of anti-independence elements: PM

Apparently referring to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman’s recent remarks against Bangabandhu, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday urged people not be confused with the motivated remarks of those who never wanted Bangladesh’s independence.

“Those who never wanted the country’s independence, those who still want to live sucking the feet of the defeated forces, then its natural they’ll say many things. I’ll urge the people of the country not to be confused over such confusing remarks of those,” she said.

Hasina was making her speech on thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech and also as her winding up speech in the first session of the 10th parliament in the evening.

In an oblique reference to the BNP chairperson and her son’s remarks, the Prime Minister said the modern world is now of technology as everything could be known through the technology.

She said Bangladesh now does not suffer from ignorance as Bangladesh is now a country of potentials in the world. “We want to take Bangladesh ahead,” Hasina said in her one-hour speech from 7.45pm to 8.45pm.

Sheikh Hasina said those who do not want to acknowledge the country’s independence, now raise questions about the independence movement and the War of Liberation.

Taking a swipe at the BNP-Jamaat alliance for their repeated bids to foil the last general election (Jan 5) through various destructive acts and killing people and members of different law enforcement agencies,  Hasina said it was very unfortunate that the BNP-Jamaat had wanted to disrupt the continuity of democracy in the country.

In this connection, the Prime Minister wholeheartedly extended her thanks and gratitude to the people of the country, voters, government officials engaged in successfully holding the general election, members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, BGB, RAB, Police and Ansar for remaining united in holding the polls despite various adversities and instigations.

“This is why democracy in Bangladesh continues…once this country saw military rulers and military-backed government,” Hasina said adding that for the first time in Bangladesh history, the country witnessed the continuity of an elected government.

Quoting a book compiled by the then Cabinet Secretary HT Imam, Hasina elaborated the background of Bangladesh’s transformation into parliamentary form of government from the presidential system back in January 1972.

Echoing opposition leader Raushon Ershad, Hasina said her party wants to establish Westminster style of democracy in Bangladesh and sought the cooperation of the opposition to this end.

“Extending cooperation to the government is a duty of the opposition and they are discharging their duties properly and they remained in parliament,” she added.

In this connection, the Prime Minister blasted those foreigners who are interfering in the country’s internal matters that there is no real opposition in parliament.

She said since BNP is not there in parliament, they remained only as a political party.

In the 9th parliament, Hasina said BNP was the opposition party on paper and in name only as they were hardly present in the House, but received all kinds of facilities, including having plots in their names.

Mentioning that Khaleda Zia being the opposition leader in 9th parliament attended only 10 working days out of 418 working days although she spoke more than seven and a half hours mostly rebuking and scolding the ruling party.

“Does it matter whether such opposition is there or not…..I don’t understand why many cry for them,” she said.

Taking a dig at military dictator Ziaur Rahman for illegally grabbing power, Hasina said though Zia declared him as the proclaimer of independence, then how could he patronized and rehabilitated those who had opposed the War of Liberation?

Following his footsteps, the Prime Minister alleged, Khaleda Zia then made Nizami and Mujahid ministers, and Bangladesh had turned into a country of militants, terrorism, Bangla Bhai and corruption.

“Whenever they (BNP) grabbed power, they pushed Bangladesh towards destruction through killings, coups, terrorism, drug addiction, even they had distorted the history of the country,” she added.

Highlighting various successes and achievements of the Awami League government in various fields over the last five years, Hasina said, “We want to stand on our own feet not to beg from others…we want to move ahead as a victorious nation keeping our head high at the global stage.”

She also expressed her firm resolve to build a hunger- and poverty-free mid-income country by 2021 through reaching the benefits of independence to every household.

The Prime Minister also extended her thanks to the opposition leader for raising various public issues in the House.
