Don’t destroy democracy: Suranjit to opposition

Senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta on Monday urged the BNP-led 18-party leaders not to destroy democracy out of wrong-headedness.

“There could be discussions if you have any constitutional and democratic demand. But don’t destroy democracy out of wrong-headedness,” he said.

Suranjit, also the advisory council member of the AL, said this while addressing a discussion organised by Bangabandhu Academy at the Institute of Diploma Engineers in the city.

“I would like to tell the 18-party leaders to engage in self-criticism and self-realisation taking clue from the language of people’s votes. Come to the path of democracy as well as peace, severing ties with terrorist party like Jamaat,” Suranjit said.

Mentioning that the just-concluded 10th parliamentary polls did not face any hurdle, Suranjit said, “No one did respond to the dramatic call of the opposition leader’s son (Tarique Rahman) to boycott the election. The election witnessed 42 percent voter turnout. People neither resisted the election nor boycotted it.”

Suranjit alleged that some media, both national and international ones, are trying to make the election controversial one by highlighting its negative sides, not its positive aspects.

  1. I understand there is a mental hospital somewhere in Pabna. This fellow, S.S.Gupta, I feel, should be sent there asap. This is just my opinion and worth the try, I believe, for the good of the country. Someone should be doing something for the good of the country and this is my contribution.

  2. What is democracy according to Mr. S.S. Gupta? What kind of democracy was it when his party boss overturned all 9 members of his team’s recommendation for keeping the CTG system for another two terms as per the SC’s observation? What kind of democracy is it in which they are just ‘yesmen’ to their party boss? (Of course this does not exclude BNP either.) Shakespeare said, ‘Liars past all truth, past all shame.’ We think Mr. Gupta still does not want to be among them.
