Dohar post-polls violence: 13 AL men sent to jail

A court here on Monday sent 13 activists of ruling Awami League to jail rejecting the bail petitions in a case filed in connection with post-polls violence at Dohar that left three people dead on January 6.

 

Senior Judicial Magistrate of Dhaka Begum Afroza Sheuli passed the order when the AL men surrendered before the court and submitted petitions seeking bail.

 

The accused are Humayun, Rahim, Taru Miah, Liakat, Russel, Alamgir, Anis, Shahjahan, Jahangir, Tota Sheikh, Akther, Ishaq and Yunus.

 

Earlier, the accused secured High Court bail on January 27.

 

On January 6, supporters of Awami League candidate Mannan Khan in Dhaka-1 parliamentary constituency swooped on the supporters of Jatiya Party (JP-Ershad) candidate Salma Islam in Hajarbigha of Dohar upazila, leaving three people killed and over 15 others injured.

 

JP candidate Salma won the election defeating Mannan in the January 5 national polls.

 

A murder case was filed with Dohar police station in this connection.

 

Investigation officer of the case and SI of Detective Branch of Police (DB) Abu Bakar Siddique submitted charge sheet accusing 60 people on March 4.
