‘Dialogue or stir’

Fakhrul

“We want a fair and all-inclusive election immediately. That’s why our leader (Khaeda Zia) wants a dialogue to overcome the current crisis,” acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Wednesday.

At a meeting with an EU delegation on June 8, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia said she was ready to hold talks anytime with the government for all-inclusive interim polls.

Fakhrul said the government did not respond to their demand for talks before the Jan 5 national elections.

He said the talks with the ruling Awami League, that was mediated by UN Assistant Secretary General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco before the elections, also yielded no result.

“We don’t think any election was held on Jan 5. The government has no moral right to cling to power,” Fakhrul said.

Asked about the agenda of the dialogue, the BNP leader said, “We have only one agenda — holding an all-inclusive election immediately.”
