The Dhaka University Day will be observed on July 1 with great enthusiasm and festivity on the campus, marking the 93rd founding anniversary of the university.
The theme of this year’s day is ‘Higher education for economic development and social justice’.
The university authorities have already completed all preparations to smoothly observe the day.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will inaugurate the daylong programme in the morning.
The university will bring out processions, and hold exhibition, discussions, reminiscence and cultural sessions, sports and debate competitions on the day.
DU sources said processions will be brought out from the residential halls of the university at 10am, while the national flag, DU flag and flags of different halls will be hoisted at 10:15 am.
Later, teachers and students will bring out a procession and then move to the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on the campus to attend inaugural dance function at 10:30 am, and discussion and reminiscing programme at 12 noon.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will join the programme as the chief guest while DU pro-vice-chancellors Prof Nasreen Ahmad (academic) and Prof Shahid Akther Hossain (administration) will be present as special guests with DU VC Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair.
Former Governor of Bangladesh Bank and chairman of the National Pay Commission Professor Farashuddin will present the keynote paper on ‘Higher education for economic development and social justice’.
Emeritus professors, former vice-chancellors, pro-vice chancellors, provosts of halls, deans, teachers and representatives of staff and employees will attend the discussion.
Besides, meetings, debate competition at the TSC, football matches, cultural functions and drama will be held on the occasion.
Different halls, departments and other offices will arrange different programmes marking the day.
The day will be observed to mark the launching of academic activities by the university on July 1 in 1921.
Starting off with just 847 students in three faculties and 12 departments in 1921, the university has grown to accommodate over 34,000 students and some 2,000 teachers in 67 departments and 10 institutes at present.
