Democracy will persist in Bangladesh: PM

She said all elections under the present government were held in a free, fair and neutral manner and the government is committed to hold the next general elections in the same way

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asserted that democracy would persist in Bangladesh and none would go against the people’s expectation of keeping the country on democratic track.

“People of the country are fascinated for democracy and they strongly support electoral process. So I don’t think anybody will go against the public will,” she said.

In a farewell meeting with outgoing Danish ambassador to Bangladesh Svend Olling at her office, the Prime Minister said next election in the country will be held in the same way that is followed in other democracies.

She said all elections under the present government were held in a free, fair and neutral manner and the government is committed to hold the next general elections in the same way.

Sheikh Hasina said, Bangladesh and Denmark are enjoying good bilateral relations and working closely on different issues of mutual and international interests.

The Danish envoy lauded the long-term vision of the Prime Minister to build Bangladesh as a happy and prosperous nation. He particularly praised the PM’s efforts to restore peace in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) and signing of the CHT peace accord.

The envoy said his country is keen to invest in various sector including power and shipbuilding.

Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin, PMO secretary Mollah Wahiduzzaman and Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were present.

Later, outgoing ambassador of Qatar Abdul Rahman Yousuf made a farewell call on the Prime Minister.

In the meeting, the Prime Minister said Bangladesh attaches importance to its relation with Qatar and look forward to further deepening the relation. She invited Qatar to invest in the sectors like power, civil aviation, healthcare, garments, pharmaceuticals and export oriented sectors.
