Defamation case: Charges framed against BNP leader MK Anwar

A court here on Wednesday framed charges against BNP standing committee member MK Anwar in a defamation case filed by a Swechchhasebak League leader.

Passing the order, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Masud Sheikh fixed July 27 to start the trial with the deposition of witnesses.

BNP leader MK Anwar was present in the dock when he pleaded innocent.

On May 7 last year, Debashish Biswas, president of Dhaka city (south) unit of Swechchhasebak League, filed the case with the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court accusing MK Anwar of making false and derogatory statements against him.

In his complaint, Debashish mentioned that Anwar at a press conference said he (Debashish) burnt the Holy Quran near Baitul Mukarram Mosque during Hefajat’s violence on May 5 during its Dhaka siege programme.
