Dhaka, Nov 1 (UNB) – BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday urged the opposition leaders and activists to take a strong vow for a decisive movement to force the government to hold the next national election under a non-party government.
“The autocratic government has killed 20 democray-loving people during the (60-hour) countrywide hartal. We’ve to take a strong promise with the blood of these martyrs to take the movement to the decisive level,” he said.
Fakhrul made the call while addressing a gathering in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office prior to a gayebana janaza for those killed in the opposition’s recent movement.
Mentioning that the non-party caretaker system must be restored for the sake of democracy, the opposition spokesman said, “There’s no alternative to holding the next polls under a non-party caretaker government. There’s no other way is left for us.”
He also called upon the country’s people to take to the streets responding to opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s call to compel the government to arrange the national election under a non-party administration.
As part of its countrywide programme, the BNP-led 18-party arranged the gayebana seeking salvation of the departed souls of those alliance leaders and activists killed by law enforcers and ‘ruling party men’ from October 25 to October 29.
Apart from Fakhrul, BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, MK Anwar, Mirza Abbas, BNP joint secretary general Amanullah Aman, Barkatullah Bulu and senior leaders and the 18-party attended the janaza led by Ulema Dla president Hafez Abdul Malek.
Similar janazas were also held in all cities, district towns and upazila headquarters after jum’a prayers.
Fakhrul prayed for salvation of the departed souls and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
He alleged that the government wants to cling to power by repressing and killing the opposition leaders and activists. “The government has destroyed democracy. They’re in bloodletting spree by killing people.”
Reiterating the opposition’s stance on election-time government, Fakhrul said they will not go to any election if it is not overseen by a non-party government.
