Death in police custody

Police claimed the man, Saiful Islam Mithu, 38, was a drug addict.

Shahjahanpur police OC Ziauzzaman told bdnews24.com Mithu died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) Wednesday midnight after he was rushed there from the police station.

Mithu and two others were detained after they tried to drive away in a motorcycle despite being shown the signal to stop at the police check post around 11:30pm at TT Parha area in the capital. The motorcycle was also seized.

They were put in the police station lockup, where Mithu complained of chest pain after a while.
He was rushed to the DMCH around midnight where doctors declared him dead, OC Ziauzzaman said.

He said Mithu and the two others with him were drug addicts.

But doctors at the DMCH said the reason of the death could not be ascertained through autopsy.

Ziauzzaman said no one came to look for Mithu at the hospital or police station till Thursday morning.
