Deadlock at Mitford Hospital continues

Interns at Mitford Hospital continued their indefinite strike for the second consecutive day on Wednesday demanding the punishment of the attackers of their fellows.

They also vowed to carry on with the strike until the culprits are brought to book. “We’ll continue our indefinite strike until the attackers are punished,” said an intern.

Medical services remained suspended at the hospital since Tuesday when the interns began the strike, much to the sufferings of patients.

Contacted, Prof Syed Mahbubul Alam, acting director of the hospital, said they were trying to resolve the crisis.

Sources at the hospital said a brawl took place between blood department technician Abdul Awal, a third class employee, and intern Hasan over the blood sample of a patient on Monday night.

At one stage of the altercation, Awal and some other third and fourth class employees physically assaulted Hasan. They also assaulted physician Joy when he came in the rescue of the intern.

Later, the interns announced to abstain from work until the attackers of Hasan and Joy are punished.
