News - D-8 offers excellent platform: Dipu
Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Monday said the D-8 countries have great potentials to emerge as a powerful economic bloc with vast human and natural resources and complementary economies.

She said the D-8 offers an excellent platform for cooperation in realising that potential and reaffirmed the commitment of Bangladesh government to the D-8 process.

The Foreign Minister said this during a meeting with Secretary General of the Developing Eight (D-8) Dr Seyed Ali Mohammad Mousavi at her ministry.

During the meeting, the D-8 Secretary General conveyed his condolence over the recent sad demise of President Zillur Rahman.

He also extended felicitations on the occasion of Bengali New Year 1420 and commended Bangladesh’s prominent role in the D-8 activities and D-8 institutional development.

The Secretary General sought support and guidance from Bangladesh in his efforts for widening and deepening the impact of the D-8 on the socioeconomic development of member states, based on the new D-8 Charter and new paper on D-8 Global Vision adopted during the last D-8 Summit.

The Foreign Minister assured the new Secretary General of her full cooperation during his tenure.

Dr Mousavi, who took over as the new Secretary General of the D-8 on January 1, is on a two-day official visit to Bangladesh.

The Foreign Minister congratulated Dr Mousavi on his recent appointment as the Secretary General of the D-8 and welcomed him on his first visit to Bangladesh.

Dr Mousavi is meeting government officials and private entrepreneurs to explore ways to further enhance cooperation between Bangladesh and the D-8.

The D-8 is an international organisation that groups together eight major developing countries — Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

The D-8 was established through the Istanbul Declaration by leaders of the eight countries on 15 June 1997.
