Country being pushed into dark tunnel: BNP

BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that the government is pushing the country towards a dark tunnel in a planned way.

“There’s no democracy in the country. The illegal regime has destroyed all institutions, including the economy, administration. They’re now giving power to an unrepresentative parliament to impeach judges in a bid to control and cripple the judiciary. With such destructive move, the government is pushing the country towards a dark tunnel,” he said.

Addressing a discussion, the BNP leader said it is urgent to save the country from the current monstrous regime by making people aware of its misrule. “The country’ independence, its sovereignty will be at stake if this government cannot be ousted soon.”

Fakhrul, BNP’s acting secretary general, urged the country’s people to get united to wage a strong movement to force the government to hold a fresh election under a non-party administration.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal arranged the discussion at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh marking BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman’s 7th ‘jail release’ day.

Tarique, the eldest son of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and its current chairperson Khaleda Zia, was arrested on March 7, 2007 during the then army-backed interim regime and freed from jail on bail on September 3, 2008.

He left for London for treatment eight days later. He has been staying in London since then.  He is an accused in a number of cases, including the August 21 grenade attack ones.

Describing Tarique a sure future leader of the country, Fakhrul said he had to suffer severe torture after the 1/11 changeover in 2007 as he tried to bring a qualitative change in politics.

He said an evil quarter who had killed Zia also tried to kill Tarique in jail to make BNP a leader-less party.

The BNP leader said those who love the country and like competent leadership want Tarique to return home and lead the party.

Criticising ministers and ruling party leaders for making ‘indecent and unguarded remarks’ against the BNP senior vice chairman, Fakhrul said they fear Tarique and his popularity. “They feel pinch after Tarique give any speech as they fear him.”

He also said what Tarique recently said about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s murder were not his own versions as she presented some historical facts from different books and newspapers.

Fakhrul asked the JCD men to get ready for a strong movement to establish people’s voting rights, democracy and install a pro-people administration.
