Convicted war criminal and also a BNP leader, Abdul Alim, has passed away at the prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the capital.

Confirming the news of his death, BSMMU Hospital Director Brig Gen Abdul Majid Bhuiyan told the Dhaka Tribune: “He died around 1:15pm while undergoing cancer treatment.”

“He was suffering from cancer since October, 2013. Alim had been sent to ICU on August 27, 2014. A medical board was formed to ensure his treatment. But, it could not be possible to give him chemotherapy as cancer had severely developed in his body. ”

Earlier on August 27, War criminal Abdul Alim was sent to intensive care unit at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University from prison cell on Tuesday as his physical condition deteriorated.

Alim, a former minister in the cabinet of late president Gen Ziaur Rahman (1977-81), served as the chairman of Peace Committee in Joypurhat during the 1971 Liberation War.

On October 9, the International Crimes Tribunal 2 awarded him death sentence. But he was spared the sentence because of his “old age, ill health and physical disability.”
