Choose most qualified, honest officials for promotion in army: PM

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Sunday asked the senior officials of Bangladesh Army to select for promotion the most qualified, capable, efficient and patriotic officers who have the belief in the Liberation War spirit rising above personal liking and disliking.
The prime minister gave the directives while addressing the Army Headquarters Selection Board -2015 at the Army Headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment.
Sheikh Hasina suggested army generals to give priority to educational qualifications, professional excellence, honesty, trust worthiness and loyalty as well as discipline and leadership capability for promotion.
She also stressed evaluation of the contributions of officers on various important occasions to national life, including containing militancy, conducting anti-terrorism operation as well as maintaining constitutional continuity in the country.
Terming the belief on Bangladesh independence and the Liberation War spirit as the fundamental ideology and prime issue for the Armed Forces, Sheikh Hasina said, ‘Leadership must be bestowed upon the patriotic officers.’
Soon after the independence, Bangabandhu undertook massive steps to develop a modern and time-befitting Army for the country, she said.
Following his footsteps, she said, the government of Awami League in its 1996-2001 tenure established many new units and important organisations like National Defance College, Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training and Bangladesh Infantry Regimental Centre to expand and modernise the army.
Sheikh Hasina mentioned that no government had worked so much for the development of the army in the past as her government did.
Referring to the role of the army in maintaining world peace, she said members of the Bangladesh Army brightened the country’s image in the international arena and it is now a symbol of confidence and discipline.
She said two FM-90, surface to air missile system regiment would be included in the Bangladesh Army by 2017 that would strengthen the military capability of the army and enable members of the force to work at the UN Peacekeeping Missions with more professionalism, she added.
Praising the role of the members of army in tackling various natural disasters and constructing infrastructures of the country like flyovers and big bridges religious establishments and Buddha Bihar at Ukhia and Ramu under Cox’s Bazar demolished by the BNP-Jamaat nexus, the prime minister said their contributions would be remembered forever.
